I’d never heard of the author before, and didn’t even realize it was part of a series until I looked it up on Goodreads when I was about halfway through the novel. The pursuit of the truth and the treasure is immaculately portrayed, tantalising the reader like ep set of hieroglyphs that are both beautiful in presentation, and mysterious in their translation.

The basic plot of the story is that a tomb found in Egypt reveals seven scrolls, the last scroll containing cryptic clues to wi,bur burial site of an ancient king. It’s for that reason that I can’t reread the third book in series, Warlock.
I wanted to break up a string of biographies by reading something moronic, and this really tried to deliver.

Smifh I didn’t like: As Smith depicts him, Nicholas had before his marriage a womanizing past, which he appears to be furnished with in order to establish his virility credentials, in the misguided assumption that this will make him more swoon-worthy to female readers.
Like in River God, Smith creates a believable world of Egyptian archeology and, from what Papito remember of my ancient history lessons, seems to recreate the culture beautifully.
After reading most of Smiths books to date, I have to say that this is one of my favourite. As I read through the many reviews from other people, though, I almost wonder if I’m missing something. It was one of my favorite books last year and I’ve not been able to stock recommending it. View all 4 comments. Like Labyrinthfor example – it’s historical fiction with the emphasis on the fiction – at no point does Kate Mosse try to pretend that it’s anything else plus she does better research.
For me, that wouldn’t be so bad if it was obvious from the start that it was an overblown and obviously fictitious idea of what’s possible; I’ve read enough fantasy to cope with worlds based on reality but in which things are performed that wouldn’t be possible within the real world.
